Wykład: Prof. Catanese wygłosi prezentację na temat dzieł sztuki, które tworzył przez ostatnie kilka miesięcy, będąc stypendystą Fulbrighta na ASP we Wrocławiu, pracując z technologiami sztucznej inteligencji i uczenia maszynowego. Krótko omówi niektóre wcześniejsze prace, aby przedstawić swoje hybrydowe podejście do praktyki twórczej, ale głównym punktem będzie postęp w odkryciach twórczych, które dokonał, oraz jak te odkrycia wpływają na kierunki jego praktyki twórczej i ostatecznie na nowe dzieła sztuki.
Warsztaty: Prof. Catanese poprowadzi praktyczny wykład dla studentów, przedstawiając niektóre punkty wyjścia do pracy ze sztuczną inteligencją i uczeniem maszynowym w ich praktykach twórczych. Paul Catanese to artysta zajmujący się mediami hybrydowymi, którego różnorodne prace obejmują instalacje, performanse, dźwięk, wideo i media drukowane. Jego prace były wystawiane w Whitney Museum of American Art, Chicago Cultural Center, New Museum of Contemporary Art, SFMOMA Artist’s Gallery, La Villette, China Academy of Art, Frankston Art Center, Stuttgart Filmwinter, Ann Arbor Film Festival i ISEA Dubai, między innymi. Catanese jest autorem książki "Director’s Third Dimension" (2001) o programowaniu 3D w czasie rzeczywistym oraz współautorem książki "Post-Digital Printmaking: CNC, Traditional, and Hybrid Techniques" (2012), która bada szybki rozwój tradycyjnego druku, aby włączyć narzędzia przemysłowe, takie jak lasery i frezarki sterowane komputerowo. The event is organized by invitation of Vasyl Savchenko (Post-Digital Graphics Studio) with the support of the Dean of the Faculty of Graphics.
Lecture: Prof. Catanese will give a presentation about the artworks he has been creating the past several months while a Fulbright Scholar at ASP in Wroclaw, working with artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. He will briefly address some past artworks to provide a sense of his hybrid approach to creative practice, but the main focus will be on the in-progress creative discoveries he has been making, and how these result in directions in his creative practice, and ultimately new artworks.
Workshop: Prof. Catanese will provide a hands-on lecture for students for some entry-points to working with artificial intelligence and machine learning in their creative practices. The focus will be on readily available machine learning packages such as Dall-E/ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and generative tools within Photoshop – in order to make the lessons accessible to the widest group. Catanese will also show some of the more intermediate techniques he is using in his own work, including the use of the Stable Diffusion integration in the visual effects software, Houdini. The goal is to create some works quickly together, and inspire discussion about this challenging and important topic that artists should become familiar with – even if they choose to not use ai/ml tools in their own practices, hands-on experience can provide a great deal of orientation towards what the actual practice looks like at this moment in time.
SHORT BIO
Paul Catanese is a hybrid media artist whose diverse range of works include installation, performance, sound, video, and print media. His work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Chicago Cultural Center, New Museum of Contemporary Art, SFMOMA Artist’s Gallery, La Villette, China Academy of Art, Frankston Art Center, Stuttgart Filmwinter, Ann Arbor Film Festival, and ISEA Dubai among others. Catanese is the author of “Director’s Third Dimension” (2001), a book on real-time 3D programming, and co-author of “Post-Digital Printmaking: CNC, Traditional, and Hybrid Techniques” (2012), a book examining the rapid evolution of traditional printmaking to incorporate industrial tools such as laser cutters and computer-controlled routers. From 2009 to 2014, he served as President of the New Media Caucus, an international professional society and affiliate of the College Art Association. In 2014, he was awarded an Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship, and named the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Artist-in-Residence at Colgate University in 2018/19. Noteworthy collections featuring his work include the Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries at Wright State University, Center for Art + Environment Archives at the Nevada Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Most recently, Catanese was selected to be a Fulbright Scholar at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, Poland as a member of the Faculty of Graphics and Media Art during Spring and Summer 2024 while on sabbatical from Columbia College Chicago where he is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for Art and Art History.
